- Hi. My name is Lucas. My family and I are migrant workers in the central valley of California. We moved from Mexico 4 years ago.
- I spend long hours in forced labor in fields like this working my hands to the bone.
- Migrant workers like me are especially vulnerable to human trafficking. We are forced to work under threats of deportation and/or death
- Late last night, after a long day of work I finally got home. I arrived to see my family was gone. I was told that I was being sent to my fifth farm in two years.
- I arrived on my new farm later that night and had to begin working right away.
- I was informed that on this farm I would be working 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. My worst conditions ever.
- It was terrible. Thankfully my family was safe, but I couldn't even talk to them due to my miserable working hours. When I finished working on something I had to work on something else. There was so much. It felt like there was no end to these fields.
- I got somewhat used to sleeping four hours a night. It was the work that wore me out. I would be coming home tired as heck, and have things like torn skin and horrific sunburns all over my body.
- The next week I just couldn't take it any more. I passed out in the fields.
- I woke up to a blur. My boss was standing over me.
- Get back to work you stupid Mexican or I'll beat you till' you die!
- I didn't want to live anymore under these conditions. There was no way out.
- Go ahead. Kill me, please.
