- Anne Frank, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl from Amsterdam, lives in the Netherlands. Her parents gift her a diary for her birthday, and she writes letters to her friend "Kitty" in which she records all of her ideas and experiences.

- During World War II, the Franks reside in German-occupied Holland. The Schutzstaffel summons Margot for deportation (the S.S.). With the help of Dutch coworkers, the Frank family flees to Mr. Frank's previous employment.

- Mr. Dussel, another Jewish runaway, comes to be with them. The Secret Annexe has become even more claustrophobic. They have very few resources, must remain extremely quiet throughout the day, are unable to leave the compound, and are always afraid of being discovered.

- The Secret Annexe's warehouse has been broken into. Police arrive to investigate and are close to discovering their hiding place's entrance. To avoid being discovered, everyone must remain still and silent for an extended period of time.
- Throughout the conquered countries, the Gestapo makes arrests and deports a large number of people. Down the street, a greengrocer is jailed for harboring two Jews. Even less food is sent to the Secret Annexe than before.
- Their secret hideout has been discovered! The Franks, the Van Daans, and Mr. Drussel are taken away by the Gestapo from the Secret Annexe. Before the Gestapo arrived, Anne didn't have time to write any more in her diary.
