Storyboard Text

  • Slavery was the major cause of the Civil War. The South depended on slavery, but the North prohibited it. Compromises and deals were made to try to settle the dispute, but it only made the situation worse. War was inevitable.

  • Fort Sumter was the first battle of a war that would claim the lives of 620,000 Americans. There were actually no casualties in this battle, besides a man who was accidentally killed by a cannon.

  • The Emancipation Proclamation
  • After the Union's victory at Antietam, President Lincoln felt it was time to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation freed all of the slaves in rebellious areas.
  • All slaves in rebellious states shall now be free.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the war. Confederate General Robert E. Lee tried for two days to defeat the Union. Ultimately, Lee was defeated, which marked the beginning of the South's downfall.

  • Having only less than 10,000 soldiers left, Confederate General Lee knew he was defeated. At Appomattox in April of 1865, just shy of four years after the war began, Lee surrendered to Union General Grant, marking the end of the war.

  • The main goals for reconstruction were admitting the South back into the Union, rebuilding the Southern economy, which had been devastated because of the freed slaves, and helping those freed slaves to find a new life.
