- We have a thieve and a deserter

- In this scene we have Lev and Koyla meeting the cornel for the first time and already the cornel is accusing them for crimes. Although Koyla say he is not a deserter cornel says he is. The cornel says that Lev is a thieve and Lev knows he is right.
- Lev give me your knife i have to put this dog down
- Alright i will give it to you
- After they were waiting for the chicken to lay eggs, they found out it was a rooster so they made him into soup. They had to do it because since it was a male, male dont lay eggs.
- So you ladies German? Partners of the enemies?
- This is the scene where Lev is first meeting Koyla in the jail cell. Koyla being a nice person offers Lev some food which was sausage. Koyla didn't hurt Lev even though he was a Jew
- No i wont.Fine here you go the last chicken
- Give me the chicken, it will be safe with me
- In this part of the book Lev and Koyla are walking in the forest where there is a lot of snow. They started hearing cries from a dog and found that the dog was hurt. That was because the Soviet Union was using them to prevent tanks from coming towards them. Since the dog was hurt Koyla had to put him down.
- While they were walking in the middle of no where they came across a farmhouse. Inside were 4 women dancing. They came inside and talked with them and found out they were part of the enemies.
- Lev and Koyla are looking for chickens. They asked everyone until they were told that a old man had chickens in his roof. They went up there and found a boy with one chicken which they did end up getting.
