  • Taxes were implemented on the people of the 18th century because of contributions to wars and court luxuries.
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • The periodic crisis took great shots at the people. Bad harvest, a slowdown in manufacturing, rising food prices, and unemployment all contributed to the essential crisis of starvation. Starvation was prominent during these times amongst the Third Estate.
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • Enlightenment ideas were a key part of the revolution, as to why the revolution was fought. Ideas such as a new formed hierarchy, separation of the church and state, constitutional government etc., were advocated.
  • Women's March to Versailles
  • A meeting was called by the king. The voting system was unfair because the Third Estate had only one vote as a whole. The Third Estate (National Assembly) proclaimed the start of a constitution. They locked doors of the Tennis Court and swore they wouldn't leave till they had equality.
  •  The Third Estate stormed the Bastille because King Louis XVI refused the concerns of his people. They first went to Hotel Des Invalides in order to arm themselves. On July 14th, they demanded that Governor de Launay release and surrender the prisoners and gun powder respectively.
  •  Women wanted bread for their families On October, 1789, women and some men marched to Versailles. The king agreed to distribute bread to them and their families. The National Guard arrived to take the King to Paris. Queen Marie Antoinette barely escaped through a passage.
