  • Hi! Mr. Potato here, I'm going to take you on a tour of the digestive system!
  • To begin, As you can see here, I enter the mouth. You can taste the delicious food coming into your mouth, so your saliva glands begin pumping out saliva even before the food reaches your mouth. As you chew, your saliva combines with mine forming a soft lump of food known as bolus.
  • The bolus then goes down the esophagus, a long, narrow tube. The muscular walls of the esophagus compress the bolus down to the stomach, our next destination.
  • When the bolus reaches the stomach, hormones signal the stomach walls to release acid, which breaks it down into a liquid known as chyme. In addition, the hormones signal the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas to begin producing bile.
  • I then enter the small intestine. The liver transports bile to the gallbladder, which stores it until I arrive. My molecules are absorbed by tiny projections called villi, and the residual fiber, water, and dead cells enter the big intestine.
  • The large intestine deposits me in a small pouch, where I remain until I exit the body via the anus. And so the long voyage through the digestive system, which takes roughly 30-40 hours, comes to a finish.
  • Then I travel into the colon or the big intestine. The majority of the fluid is drained from the colon via the intestinal walls. This results in a mushy mass known as stool.
