  • PARAPATRIC SPECIATION
  • It occurs when populations are separated not by a geographical barrier, such as a body of water, but by an extreme change in habitat. While populations in these areas may interbreed, they often develop distinct characteristics and lifestyles. Reproductive isolation in these cases is not geographic but rather temporal or behavioral.
  • A lot of mango trees are present in a forest. The mango trees are called Carabao Mangoes also known as Philippine Mangoes or Manila Mangoes.
  • Your babies are so cute!
  • SANAOL
  • Oh, Thank you! It will be your turn soon.
  • In the forest, two types of soil are present. One is clay loam soil and the other is contaminated clay loam soil. The contamination is due to mining activities leaving waste with high amounts of metals. These metals are absorbed into the soil, preventing the mango trees present in that particular area from growing.
  • ehe tnx!
  • Now it's my turn to have babies!
  • Lucky you! I miss mine:(
  • Your flowers looked nice.
  • As time passed by, the mango trees that are within the area with contaminated soil gradually developed a tolerance to the metals present in the soil. This resulted in a change in their flowering period, which became much earlier than the flowering period of the mangoes in the area with uncontaminated soil.
  • Mango trees that grow on the same type of soil selectively breed among themselves, and the different times of flowering are the cause of the isolation among the mango trees.
  • While it is possible for both types of mango trees to interbreed, the different times of flowering in response to the type of soil that they grow on makes them unable to interbreed. This then reduces the gene flow.
