Storyboard Text

  • Adaptation: The Change Begins
  • Overproduction: The Horror!
  • Too many of us right? Well, in nature, creatures tend to produce more offspring than necessary to survive. This overproduction is the first step in natural selection.
  • Competition: The Fight!
  • Resources (like food) are limited since there are so many of us. We have no choice but to fight for what we want.
  • "Back off! ,That cricket is mine (snarled the Toucan). Toucan (Two-can) play that game".
  • Variation: Understanding the Enemy
  • Speciation: The Possibilities
  • My beak does not hep me blend into the canopy. Predators can see me easily, so toucans like me have to be careful. This is something I will also pass onto my offspring if I survive and reproduce.
  • My beak helps me get fruits as well as blend in. This is a trait I shall pass onto my offspring.
  • My short beak does not help me keep as warm, when I tuck it into my wings. I am not well suited to this environment.
  • My long beak helps keep me warm (thermal regulation), when I tuck it into my wings. With my long beak, I have a better chance of survival.
  • Of course we were not always like this. Over the course of many years, we have evolved (changed) and adapted (got used to) to our environment . Favourable traits that I inherit, prove that I am more likely to survive and produce off springs. I will also pass my traits to the next generation and ensure their survival. This is called natural selection.
  • This is also referred to as "survival of the fittest". It means that animals with traits suited to their environment survive and reproduce and animals that are not suited to their environment don't.
  • As the traits are being passed down from generation to generation. The favourable traits remain and the unfavourable traits disappear.
