- Ellie is struggling with the fact that he will be separated from the rest of his family. He is scared and not fully aware of what is happening yet. In Night Ellie says "And I walked on with my father, with the men. I didn't know that this was the moment in time and the place where I was leaving my mother and Tzipora forever. I kept walking, My father holding my hand".(Weisel 29)

- Ellie is having a conversation with his "faceless roommate in the infirmary. The man tells Ellie that "I have more faith in Hitler than anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises to the Jewish people."(Weisel 19)

- Ellie and the rest of the jews are freezing in the cold. It is winter and they can't handle the conditions. In Night "Winter had arrived. The days became short and the Nights almost unbearable. From the first few hours of dawn, a glacial wind lashed us like a whip.(Weisel 77)
