Cause of the Persian War!

The Battle Of Marathon

The Battle Of Thermopylae

The Battle of Salamis

The Battle Of Plataea

EFfect Of the War

The Persian War all started when several Ionian Greeks on the west coast started to revolt against the Persian empire. When the Ionian Greeks asked for help, Athens was the only city state to send help. When Darius 1 heard of this, he declare war on Athens which sparked the Battle Of Marathon.

During the battle of Marathon Athens asked Sparta for help but Sparta refused. Athens knew what was coming so they decided to perform a battle formation called a Phalanx. Then Athenian runner named Pheidippides sprinted 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to warn them that Persia is coming. Then the battle started. Athens perfected the Phalanx. but Persia had never seen this formation so they didn't know how to counter it. So then Athens won the Battle of Marathon.

After Darius 1 died, his son Xerxes wanted to take revenge on all of Greece especially Athens. So this time, Persia declared war on all of Greece. And for one of the first times in history Athens and Sparta joined forces to defend Greece. The Spartan king, Leonidas held off the Persian force while the Athenians evacuated. Xerxes slayed Leonidas and his forces. Xerxes Thought he won so he burned Athens down, and ran after the Athenians and they led Xerxes to a small island named Salamis.

So then, Athens lead Persia and Xerxes to the island of Salamis. The Persian ships were bigger than the Athenian ships but the Persian ships didn't do well in small spaces, and they found themselves trapped. Then the Athenian ships smashed again, and again, and again, until they sunk. Xerxes saw his whole army, defeated and they retreated to Persia.

Xerxes tried to run with little of his army but Athens quickly followed, defeating them once more at the battle of Plataea. In 479 B.C.Xerxes returned to Persia, defeated and never invaded Greece again.

Athens and Sparta took credit for the victory but after it's defeat at Thermopylae, Sparta was very weak but Athens rebuilt itself and made itself the most powerful city-state. Also Athens created the Delian League, a group of city states to protect itself if Persia ever invaded again. Athens achieved a Golden Age of power
