While living in the castle with her father, Ophelia has fallen in love with Denmark's prince, Hamlet. He writes her passionate love letters expressing his true feelings for her. (Act 2 scene 1)

However, her brother Laertes is quick to disagree with her fixation on Hamlet.

As well as her father...

The two men she has known her entire life have expressed distaste for Ophelia's love interest. Since she must listen to men, she knows that her persisting feelings for Hamlet are wrong and sinful. (Act 1 Scene 3)

Although her father has expressed explicit distaste for Hamlet, he now instructs her to continue seeing Hamlet in order for him to spy on Hamlet and determine the root of his insanity.

Later when Ophelia has the chance to break up with Hamlet he admits to once loving her but then retracts his statement as well as threatening to ruin her reputation. (Act 3 Scene 1)

"For Hamlet and the trifling of his favor,
Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood,
A violet in the youth of primy nature,
Forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting,
The perfume and suppliance of a minute.
10No more."-Act 1 Scene 3

"I would not, in plain terms, from this time forth,
Have you so slander any moment leisure,
As to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet.
" -Act 1 Scene 3

you are to continue seeing Lord Hamlet so I can spy on him and understand his madness

I thought he didn't want me seeing Hamlet...

I've always loved you, but I love you not
