  • The plague came to Europe from the East, most probably via the trade routes known as the silk road overland, and certainly by ship oversea.The Black Death followed the trade routes and soon appeared in mainland Italy , the most urbanized country in Europe

  • ;The Black Death is caused by the Yersin bacillus, a bacteria that is common in the stomach of certain fleas. The fleas live on small rodents, especially black rats. Ordinarily, a balance exists between the bacillus, fleas, and rats, causing no harm to other creatures. The digestive tract of the flea can become blocked, causing it to regurgitate the bacillus into the bloodstream of its host. When that happens, the rats become infected, and plague can break out.
