  • Slaves faced very harsh conditions on the journey to the West Indies and Caribbean. Below deck was extremely hot, crammed and slaves were chained together.

  • Slaves were occasionally brought to the top deck on their journey across the middle passage. They were brought above deck for exercise which consisted of their feet being whipped so they would jump.
  • Slaves were most commonly sold at auction. The two main types of auction was ‘sold to the highest bidder’ and a ‘scramble’. Slaves were prepared for auction in a multitude of ways, their cuts were filled with hot tar, their bodies were rubbed with oil or beeswax to make them look healthier and they were often fed well on the days leading up.
