  • A2+B2=C2
  • Pythagoras, why are you so overly excited?
  • A2+B2=C2
  • Well you see, I have finally developed my theorem!
  • Your theorem? What good would a Theorem do?
  • A2+B2=C2
  • It's a theorem that will allow us to find the hypotenuse with any right triangle with only two known sides!
  • Pythagoras, I'm afraid I am not understanding this quite well.. could you give some examples?
  • x
  • 8
  • Of course! A good one is a right triangle that has a known value of 6 and 8 on two sides. The hypotenuse, or the longest side, is the squared amount of 6 and 8, added up.
  • 6
  • Well the squared amount of 6 is 36, and the squared amount of 8 is 64, which adds to 100. There is no way the hypotenuse of this triangle can be 100!
  • x
  • 8
  • Quite perceptive indeed! There is one more step. Because you squared the other two sides, in order to find the unmultiplied value, you have to find the square root of 100, which is the missing side.
  • 10
  • 6
  • Ah! The square root of 100 is 10, meaning the hypotenuse is 10, which actually does make sense! This is a shocking discovery!
  • B
  • x
  • There's even another form of the theorem! If you know the hypotenuse but only know one leg, like in this example, you can find the unknown leg quite easily!
  • 10
  • 12
  • Hmmmm, but how would you even start to find out the unknown leg?
