  • Native American (1600)During this time Native Americans lived in huts and worked hard to survive. They grew lots of crops and hunted for their food. The Natives lived all around America. They constantly had to protect themselves from colonist who invaded there.Sarah Winnemucca was a popular author of this era.
  • Puritanism or Colonial (1620-1750)During this time pilgrims traveled across the sea to settle in a new world in hopes for religious freedom. They built their own homes from sticks and materials they found in the woods, and they planted crops as there food. A popular author of this era was Robert Beverley.
  • During this time a special event was the Battle of Lexington in 1775. Most people of this time continued there normal life's while others participated in the war. Food and supplies were harder to maintain because people had to share their food with the soldiers. Most citizens lived in normal small brick houses. A popular author at this time was Thomas Paine.
  • Revolutionary, Age of Reason, Enlightenment (1750-1800)
  • Romanticism, American Gothic (1800- 1865)During this time Literature/ poetry was a common resource for many people. Authors would write about events that were occurring and their emotions with that. Another important thing during this era was individualism, meaning people put themselves before society. A popular author of this time was Edgar Allen Poe.

  • Transcendentalism (1840- 1860)Transcendentalism started with a small group in New England. People of this time believed that essential values were individualism, idealism, and the divinity of nature. A famous author of this time was Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was the primary practitioner of the movement, which existed loosely in Massachusetts in the early 1800s before becoming an organized group in the 1830s.
  • Realism, Naturalism and Regionalism (1865- 1914)The civil war was the spark to creating Realism, Naturalism, and Regionalism. Realism is a manner and method of composition by which the author describes normal average life, in a truthful way. Naturalist suggests that lives and events are decided by forces beyond our control. Regionalism is loyalty to a distinct region. The people of this time all had different thoughts on what to believe. A famous author of this time Stephan Crane.
