Storyboard Text

  • Ellington worked with many different types of jazz such as swing, orchestra, and just melodies.
  • How did Ellington's style change throughout the years?
  • overall, he went from the growling in Black and Tan Fantasy, to smoother songs.
  • Ellington has always compiled different sounds into his music. His tempo slowly moved to a slower pace.
  • My personal favorite style is Swing. It is very upbeat and happy. The dancing is also so entertaining to watch. The dancing and the music itself just brought a lot of joy to people despite the bad times.
  • Well there were many different things going on throughout the U.S. when Ellington was making music. His style needed to change to brighten times during the Great Depression and then again during WWll. They were also exploring so many different types of sound through mutes etc. and found new things that that they adapted to.
  • You know, why do you think Ellington's style changed?
  • I love Duke Ellington's music and these are some of his most profound works. I really like Black and Tan Fantasy because of the contrast. To me there is a difference between the background thuds and the foreground brass instruments that gives the song a very interesting tone. It Don't Mean a Thing is my personal favorite from this list. It is so upbeat and iconic and I especially love the piano in this song. Conga Brava really shows more of Ellington's slow tempo. It is very relaxing and soothing to me. Black, Brown and Beige is not my favorite of Ellingtons work. His orchestra style just really isn't for me but that doesn't mean it isn't composed well, just not for me. Blood Count is what I picture in my head when I think of Jazz. It is calming and soothing. I really like this later part of Ellington's work.
