  • This battle was important because Vicksburg was the only remaining route to the Confederacy's western regions with their indispensable supplies. The Battle would decide the fate of the Confederacy.

  • Grant was given the option to choose which battles he wanted to fight. Grant had chosen to fight Vicksburg.So Grant pushed his way through Mississippi to get to Vicksburg.

  • Since I am now Commander of theUnion troops I promise to lead us to victory.
  • Grant at first had tried several attacks at Vicksburg but they proved to be ineffective. Grant realized he would have to lay siege. On July 4 of 1863 Pemberton had surrendered.
  • Where most of the battles took place outside of the fort.
  • One result of the Battle of Vicksburg was that Grant's reputation as a fighting general was widely spread. Another result of the Battle of Vicksburg was that it secured Grant's rise to commander of all Union forces.
