- The story starts with Montag, a firefighter, who burns books instead of putting out fires. In this Dystopian future, the first scene starts with Mildred, his wife, passing out on overdosing on her medication

- Montag and his team have an encounter with an old woman who burned herself alive with her books because she refused to give them away. Montag started questioning his occupation and felt sympathy for the old woman, and out of curiosity steals 20 books while no one is looking.

- Montag contemplates his life and decides to stay home from work for the day. He hides a book behind his pillow as shown in the slide. Beatty, the Captain, comes over to see how he is doing.
- Montag remembers his old English Professor and contacts him to print out copies of the book. This is because Montag believes he has found the last Bible in the world. Faber gives Montag an earpiece, so he can guide him verbally from a distance.
- A call comes in and the fireman race to their destination: Montag's house. Beatty reveals that Montag's own wife, Mildred, reported and betrayed him for having books. Montag is astonished and is forced to burn his own house.
