  • Who knows better than I do what normal is?
  • The rest of Harrison's appearance was Halloween and hardware
  • Scrap metal was hung all over him.
  • I am the Emperor! Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once!I shall now select my empress!
  • Play your best, and I'll make you barons and dukes and earls.
  • It was then that Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun.
  • Many people believe that total equality would be the end of tyranny. This is flat out WRONG, and Kurt Vonnegut agrees, so he writes this story to demonstrate that. Rather than striving for excellence, the people strive for mediocrity, but the people best at being mediocre are the ones who do not believe in the law. But the one who is truly caged is Diana Moon because she refused to allow anything with any extent of beauty to be brought out. It is also a warning of how resistance to this form of total equality will result in an overcompensation back toward tyranny but in another form. Harrison declares to be an absolute emperor with absolute power, yet the worst possible way his world could turn out is still better than this one because people would not be shackled by mediocrity.
