  • Hera hated Hercules so, she caused him to go temporarily insane, and while under Hera’s spell he killed his wife and sons. Once the spell had worn off, and Hercules saw what he had done, he was filled with remorse. He wanted to know what he could do to make up for his terrible acts. He went to the oracle of Delphi for advice. She told Hercules that he must go south and serve King Eurystheus and accept whatever punishments he gave him.King Eurystheus, under the guidance of Hera, came up with twelve impossible tasks for Hercules. These twelve tasks became known as the Twelve Labors of Hercules.
  • The First Labor given to Hercules was to kill the Nemean Lion. This lion was special in the fact that no man made weapon could pierce its hide. Hercules was not aware of this, and set out to kill the lion with his bow and arrows and his club. Once Hercules tracked the lion to its den, he began to shoot arrows at the lion, which had no effect, as the arrows simply bounced off of the lion’s skin. Using his club, he hit the lion on the head with so much force, that the club shattered, but it did momentarily stun the great beast. Hercules used this moment to use his great strength to strangle the lion to death.
  • The Second Labor was to kill the Lernaean Hydra. The Hydra was a huge snake-like beast, that lived in the swamp. The Hydra was dangerous because it had nine heads and its blood was poisonous. Hercules decided to cut each of the heads off, being careful to avoid the deadly blood as he did so. Once the Hydra emerged from the cave, Hercules set his plan into motion, of cutting each head off. It was then that the true problem of the Hydra revealed itself. Each time Hercules cut off one of the Hydra’s heads, two more would grow back in its place. After failing to kill the Hydra in this manner, Hercules decided to use a new strategy. When he cut off one of the Hydra’s heads he would use a torch to cauterize the neck so no new head could grow back. Using this strategy, Hercules was able to defeat the Hydra.
