  • In the 19th century, the industrial revolution (also known as trade unions)took place in Britain.
  • What is the industrial revolution?
  • Agriculture and handicraft-based economies gave way to large-scale industry, automated production, and factory systems.
  • This means that new machinery and ways of arranging work were introduced,
  • replacing many jobs to be completed by an individual.
  • Many ups and downs occurred during these times, the negative including Workhouses.
  • What is a Workhouse?A Workhouse was an organisation that was created to provide job and shelter to persons who were poor and unable to support themselves.This sounds good, however it negativelyimpacted many people and their families.
  • People were fed poorly, families were separated and individuals were forced to work long hours everyday to extreme lengths.This resulted in reformists signing a charter for a better life in 1838.
  • Although this wasn't the only negative impact, positive situations occurred as well!
  • The Industrial Revolution resulted in the development of numerous inventions that improved the manufacturing capabilities of specific industries and the economy as a whole.As the reliance on manual labour was reduced, poverty and unemployment increased.
  • The Industrial Revolution had numerous positive outcomes. Among these were increases in wealth, people could live and eat healthier, heavy improvements in education, live in more comfortable housing, and buy items a lot cheaper.
