- Gary Paulsen is sledding with his dogs on a grandly beautiful morning. They went a new route since the lake wasn't strong enough. Beauty was everywhere and the sunlight sparkled on the ice crystals. But then a doe exploded out of the woods and flew over the lead dog, Dollar. She smelled like fear, metallic like, and spit was everywhere.
- The doe flew as Gary Paulsen saw why she was running, wolves. They were gaining on her and she kept falling into the ice. The wolves were so intent on the smell that Gary Paulsen said he might as well not have existed. The dogs ran faster after they got excited over the smell too.
- Until, the beautiful day had turned into horror. She could no longer have the advantage and fell constantly. Then they were on her. On her.
