  • In New England colonies, public education was supported by the people's religious faith. Schoolhouses were built in towns with 100 or more people.

  • In the Middle Colonies, each religious group had to decide on how to educate their children, some groups built church schools or had parents teach their kids at home.

  • In the southern colonies, there weren't really any public schools. Sometimes neighbors would pool their resources to hire a teacher. Wealthier families would hire tutors for their young children and send older children to schools in distant cities.

  • African Americans came to Colonial America by the Middle Passage, they were sold as slaves. The journey to America was long and harsh, many didn't live. These people were packed tightly on the ships.
  • Slavery started first in the Virginia Colony and soon, every region used slaves to help raise cash crops, farm, and do other work.
  • African American slaves had little hope of making a better life. Enslavers worked them hard and they were considered property.
