  • Jim Is a bird that is looking for a new tree to build a nest. He finds a tree 7ft away, and looks up 70 degrees to a branch. He needed to find the height of the tree, so he used trig. He finds out that x/7 = tan(70), which becomes x = 7(tan(70)). Doing the math from there, He rounds the height to be 19ft tall. He decided that this tree was too short for his liking.

  • Jim finds another tree later on in the day, and he hoped that it was taller than the first one. Jim can see that the branch is 34ft away from his line of sight, and he is looking up 42 degrees. he used trig to find the height of the tree. He figures out that x/34 = sin(42), which is then x = 34(sin(42)), and finds out that the height is 23ft. This tree was also a bit short for his liking.
  • After many failed attempts, Jim tried very hard to find a tree, but they were either too tall or short. But then, something caught his eye..

  • Jim knew that this tree was 30ft tall, because he had a friend who built a nest here, and was the right height for him. He wanted to find the angle of elevation, just so he knows that the baby chicks would be able to fly down to the surface safely. He uses the inverse of tan, which is tan^-1(23/30), which is 37 degrees, and he knew that this was a good angle of elevation for his liking.
  • Jim built his nest on the tree and started laying eggs. He lived there with his bird nest happily ever after.
