  • Roderick Usher writes a letter to the narrator to visit him for a time to help him overcome his nervousness. When the narrator arrives, he observes that the house is neglected and his friend Usher is in a state of decay and appears ill.
  • Fear of Mr. Usher
  • Usher tells that his twin sister Madeline is dying, then she passes away, and Usher decides to store her body in a vault, while he plans her burial. The narrator notices that Madeline's cheeks and chest are still flushed, and finds it strange, then Usher's demeanor changes drastically after her death.
  • Madeline's attack
  • After Madeline dies, the narrator begins to hear strange noises in the house. One stormy night, Usher goes to the narrator's room and opens the windows as if to a terrifying dimension with fog. To calm Usher down, he reads to him a little.
  • Fall of the House of Usher
  • As the narrator reads, sounds begin to echo in the house. Suddenly a scream is heard. Usher tilts his chair and begins rocking back and forth. Usher whispers that he has been hearing sounds from his sister's coffin and fears he has buried her alive. The door opens and Madeline appears, covered in blood.
  • Madeline jumps on Roderick and dies immediately. Roderick also dies instantly, probably from shock and impression. The narrator flees as quickly as possible from the house.
  • As the narrator runs, he stops and watches as the house collapses and disappears in the fog, the silence and the cold of the terrible night. Until it disappears completely.
