Storyboard Text

  • During chapter 14 as Stella and Kennedy are talking about Stellas mom, Kennedy notices one of Stellas lies. In the text after Kennedy asks where her grandmother died at Stella says, "In Opelousas, Kennedy! The same place I grew up" (Bennett 269). After Stella says this Kennedy thinks back to when she was little and Stella told her she was from a town that started with an M. This is important because now that Kennedy is older she understands Stella more and now it will be harder for Stella to hide the truth of her past.
  • I'm from a town called Opelousas
  • What Kennedy thinks about
  • Didn't she tell me she was from a town that started with an M?
  • During the text when Stella comes out to visit Kennedy and sees she has a Black boyfriend, she disapproves instantly. In the text, Stella says to Kennedy, "It's not that. I just don't like anybody who acts like him" (Bennett 276). Stella saying this isn't out of the ordinary for her, but it's still a terrible thing to say. She has said things like this to Kennedy on multiple occasions and it could have an affect how Kennedy views Black people.
  • Hello, Its a pleasure to finally meet you!
  • You are such a know it all! You dont know me or my daughter!
  • What Stella Says
  • He went to Dartmouth!
  • During Chapter 15 as Jude and Kennedy just finished going back and forth, Jude shows Kennedy the truth. In the text before giving her the photograph, Jude tells Kennedy, "You shouldn't tell people the truth because you want to hurt them. You should tell them because they want to know it. And I think you want to know now" (Bennett 288). This is important as it gives Kennedy the missing information about her mother. Stella continuously lies to Kennedy, so for Kennedy to see the truth is a big moment for her.
