- My brother Waleed and I were refugees in Syria and this is our story...
- In our home town of Aleppo Syria, our home was bombed in the cross fire of the Syrian Civil War. My brother, my sistser Hana, my parents, and I were forced to flee.
- Our dad was the leader of our family and kept us all together. But my siblings lost all hope, especially Waleed. We went from Turkey to Greece to Austria, from one refugee camp to another. Seeking sanctuary from a devastating war.
- We spent days getting a smuggler to boat us across the river into Turkey for it to only capsize. Waleed and Hana was younger than I (12) but only Hana couldn't swim. To save her life, our mother gave her away to another boat with no room left.
- At last, we made it to Munich Germany, where we could start again. Here I met another refugee escapee, Ruth whole vows to help us find Hana!
- Overall, the Book Refugee by Alan Gratz tells 3 stories of 3 different Refugees. In particular, Mahmoud, a 12 year old boy, survives this nightmare and perseveres. This story of resilience and determination is both admirable and inspiring! Let your eyes be opened to what goes on in the world around you and prepare your mind and heart for the emotional roller coaster ride that is Mahmoud's story of survival.
