Beowulf ended up hearing the tale of Grendel, a monster that killed many warriors of Heorot. Eventually, Beowulf was called to the land's defense.
Crossing the Threshold
Beowulf could not refuse the call, he would sooner die than be a man who shamefully cannot defend his people, so he rallied his men and set off.
Tests and Enemies
Beowulf's mentor is King Hrothgar. Having Hrothgar by his side teaches Beowulf the knowledge that a king must defend his people, there is no other option. He also receives a powerful sword from the knight, Unferth.
Beowulf and his men cross the sea and travel to Denmark.
Beowulf defeats Grendel and takes his arm as a trophy. He would go on to also battle the swamp hag and dragon.
