Storyboard Text

  • In earlier times, the sovereign had the right of life and death over his subjects.
  • The power exercised by the sovereign was simply a matter of deciding whether or not someone would be killed.
  • what power does he have over my life? He already takes my money, crops, and sons!
  • You have been called in front of the sovereign King!
  • But who will take care of my wife and farm?
  • The King will decide your punishment.
  • This "right of life" was effectively a "right of death." The power exercised by the sovereign was simply a matter of deciding whether or not someone would be killed.
  • The sovereign power has control of the population due to being in control of money and resources kept from the people.
  • Today, the primary interest of power now is in life, and how to secure, extend, and improve it.
  • For America!
  • Wars are still waged— bloodier than ever—but they are not waged on behalf of the "right of death" of some sovereign lord, but are rather waged to secure a better way of life for an entire people. 
  • For France!
  • Society then moved on to the idea of managing the populations by the idea of "biopower".
  • 
  • This is where we begin Thomas' story. He shows us how he lives everyday due to the different ways society has thought they had the power over his body and ideas. 
  • St. Michaels Catholic High School. The most prestigious boarding school in New York is where Thomas goes to school. 
  • He has two best friends, Sarah and Daniel who are both seniors with Thomas awaiting graduation in the spring.
