  • Mom, what is dirt?
  • Dirt is another word for soil. Soil is the loose material covering most of the earths surface. It's made of both organic and inorganic materials .
  • It supports plant growth and is a habitat for many different organisms.
  • Soil is necessary to grow the food we eat. It keeps the roots upright while they grow, provides minerals and nutrients, and protects plants from erosion.
  • One of the organisms that live in soil are earthworms. Earthworms help to aerate the soil and are one of the major decomposers of organic material. Their excrement also helps to increase the fertility of soil.
  • It seems like it's really important then.
  • It is, which is why it's also important to protect it.

  • Many things can affect the overall health of soil.
  • Soil degradation can be caused by natural and unnatural causes such as deforestation, strong winds, over farming, droughts, and heavy rain.
  • Another thing that can negatively impact the health of soil is over grazing. When wildlife or livestock eat too much from a pasture with out enough time for it too recover. It can be caused by things like droughts, overstocking, improper land use and others.
  • It can lead to soil erosion, losses of species, food shortages, deforestation, global warming, and cattle dying.
