  • From the 1200-1300, the first Maori travelers arrived in New Zealand. The Ngai Tai iwi, who carry the blood of Maui, are often acknowledged as being amongst the original inhabitants of Aotearoa. They now reside in Auckland.
  • Where am I?
  • From 1600-1750, the Tamaki tribes terraced the volcanic cones, building pa (settlements behind protective palisades). Across the isthmus, they developed 2,000 hectares of kumara gardens. It was pre-European New Zealand's most wealthy and populous area.
  • In the early 18th century, the Ngati Paoa people edged their way onto the Hauraki Gulf and as far north as Mahurangi. They are now also based in Tamaki Makaurau. And in 1840, the first permanent European settlement in NZ was established by Britain.
  • Also in 1840, the tribe Ngati Whatua sold the land that would one day become Auckland Harbour to William Hobson.
  • Auckland grew pretty quickly, from 1,500 people in 1841 to 12,500 in 1864.In 1841, Tamaki Makaurau was declared the country's capital by William Hobson, and explorers, missionaries, whalers, and permanent residents soon began to occupy the land that once belonged to the Maori. (NZ's capital was later changed to Wellington.)
  • Hello! Church is on Sunday 9:00am! Come along!
  • In 1994, the Sky Tower started construction in the city and finished in 1997. By then, the population was about 1.15 million. Over time, the English began to realize their mistakes, and some cultural attractions in Auckland are now directed to preserving Maori history. Even though Maori numbers have been rapidly declining, the government has finally acknowledged the importance of New Zealand's past and tried to make amends.
