Hermia loves Lysander and Lysander loves Hermia. Helena loves Demetrius but Demetrius doesn't love Helena, he loves Hermia. Hermia's father forced Hermia to marry Demetrius and he loved that but Hermia didn't, she wanted to marry Lysander but if Hermia refused to marry Demetrius, by Athenian law, she would be locked up and be put in a nunnery for the rest of her life...

Once they are alone, Lysander and Hermia discuss their options. Lysander mentions that he has a widowed aunt who lives outside of Athens and would let them stay with her. Then they could get married because they would be outside the confines of Athenian law. They agree to meet in the woods tomorrow night and from there they will run away and get married...
Hermia is annoyed and sick of Helena's complaining, so she decides to tell Helena about their secret plan. She confesses that she is planning to meet Lysander in the woods tomorrow night to run away with him and get married. They ask that Helena not reveal their plan to anyone, and the couple leaves. Helena decides that she will not keep their secret plan. She tells Demetrius of their plan.
Snug is concerned that he won't be able to memorize his lines, but Quince informs him that it's just roaring, so he can make it up as he goes along. Bottom offers to play the part of the lion too, but once again Quince tells him no. Quince instructs the group to meet tomorrow night in the forest in order to rehearse in private.
King Oberon's wife Titania has recently adopted a young boy whom she stole from an Indian king. Oberon talks to Puck about how he is going to get revenge on his wife. He asks Puck to find a purple flower that had been struck by Cupid's arrow. The juice of it, if put upon someone's eyes, will make that person fall in love with the next person that he or she sees.

When Oberon spots Demetrius and Helena entering the woods, he makes himself invisible in order to listen in on their conversation. Demetrius continues to deny Helena's love. He wants to kill Lysander for trying to run off with his intended bride
Lysander and Hermia decide to stop and rest. Lysander wants to sleep next to Hermia, but she forces him to move away from her. Puck sees Lysander sleeping. Puck assumes this is the correct man by his Athenian clothing, so he puts the potion on his eyes.
Demetrius and Helena run in and stumble upon Lysander and Hermia sleeping. Helena wakes Lysander up, and she is the first person he sees; therefore, he immediately falls in love with her. Helena thinks he is making fun of her. Helena runs away to avoid his false advances. Lysander decides to follow after Helena and leaves his true love Hermia sleeping.
