Storyboard Text

  • King Laius is told that his son, Oedipus, will kill him and marry his wife. Therefore, he has a servant pin his ankles together, at the top of mountain, to die there.
  • The servant didn't want to leave the baby to die, so he gives it to a shepherd that hands him off to King Polybus and Queen Merope. They adopt Oedipus and raise him as their own. Finally, a drunk tells him that the King and Queen are not his real parents, but they denied it when confronted.
  • Oedipus talks to an oracle and is told that he will kill his father and marry his mother. To avoid this situation, he leaves Corinth and travels to the city of Thebes. While traveling, he crosses paths with King Lais, his father. They get in a fight and out of self defense, Oedipus kills him.
  • As Oedipus is traveling to the city of Thebes, he encounters a Sphinx. The Sphinx asks all travelers a riddle and if they answer correctly, they are allowed to continue their journey, but if they answer incorrectly they are killed. The Sphinx asks him, "What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three at night?" Oedipus correctly answers, "Man: as an infant, he crawls on all fours; as an adult, he walks on two legs; and in old age, he uses a walking stick." Therefore, he is allowed to continue his journey to Thebes.
  • Creon, Queen Jacosta's brother, said whoever can solve the riddle will be made king of Thebes and receive the queens hand in marriage. Oedipus inherits the throne and marries Queen Jacosta, his mother. The prophecy is now fulfilled and they have 4 children together.
  • The truth is found that Oedipus unwillingly killed his father and married his mother. Queen Jocasta commits suicide when she finds out. When Oedipus finds her, he takes a pin from her dress and pokes his two eyes out in distress. He is then exiled from Thebes and two of his kids guide him out to the desert, where he walks around blind. He then dies in Colonus.
