  • The Asocial stage 0-8 weeksThe baby is recognising carers and forming bond, however is currently incapable of distinguishing between objects and humans. However, babies do show show signs of preference for familiar adults and therefore find it easier to calm down when they are comforted by them

  • The Indiscriminate Stage- 2-7 months Babies are more social and do not display stranger anxiety, they show a preference for people rather than objects. They accept comfort from anyone, therefore are said to be indiscriminate.
  • I feel upset, can someone comfort me
  • I dont know this person but I want to play with them. I prefer people to my toys
  • Specific Attachments- 7-12 monthsBabies start to display separation anxiety from their primary attachment. They show signs of stranger anxiety when left in the presence of someone they don't recognise. Babies have learnt to specifically attach to the person who responds best to their needs
  • This is my mum. I love being with her the most because she knows how to make me feel better when I get sad. I get really upset when she leaves me by myself
  • Wheres Mum? I dont know you, Im very upset
