- Ellie Wiesel is 15 and very passionate about his religion and growing his faith. He goes to Moishe the Beadle to read of the Zohar. Elie is very devoted to God.
- "Why do I pray? Strange question. why do I live? Why do I breathe?"
- "Why do you pray?"
- However, soon the Nazis arrived and decreed that every Jew had to wear the yellow star. Soon after, they were forced into ghettos with all the other Jews in Sighet.
- "The Yellow star? So what? Its not lethal..."
- On a Saturday, they were forced to climb into the train cars, 80 people per car. It was hot and they hardly had any food, only a few loafs of bread.

- "Move you lazy good for nothings!!!"
- They arrived at Birkenau. There, Elie saw his mother and Tzipora for the last time. All he cared about now was staying with his father

- Elie begins working at the warehouse counting bulbs and electronic pieces. One day, Idek the Kapo saw him and beat him brutally. A young French woman he worked beside comforted him. He met her again years later in Paris. She remembered him.
- "Bite your lip little brother...Don't cry. Keep your anger, your hate, for another day, for later. The day will come but not now...Wait. Clench your teeth and wait..."
- A long time later, the camp was evacuated because the Russians are advancing. They had to run for hours in the snow and anyone who was too slow was shot. They kept running until they arrived at an abandoned village
