Storyboard Text

  • After her argument with Jason, she added killing her children to the plan, to make Jason suffer. The chorus advises caution, dismayed and increasingly outraged as Medea’s plans take hold. They seek to dissuade her or deter her from the deed: “We beseech you, Do not slaughter your children”
  • She had her hesitations, but by chance, Aegeus, King of Athens, offers Medea to stay in his city in exchange for knowledge of curing his sterility. Now guaranteed a haven in Athens, Medea has cleared all obstacles to completing her revenge.
  • Later, a servant relays the gruesome details of the King and Princess' death. Medea finds pleasure in this, knowing her plan had worked. She managed to convince Jason that she was now in favor of his new marriage, and gave the royals gifts. These were in fact, poisoned, leading to their deaths.
  • "My friends, my resolve is fixed on the deed, to kill my children with all speed and to flee from this land: I must not, by lingering, deliver my children for murder to a less kindly hand. They must die at all events, and since they must, I who gave them birth shall kill them."
  • The palace opens its doors, revealing Medea and the two dead children seated in a chariot drawn by dragons. Impatient, Medea advises Jason to say what he has to say, he curses her. He should have known her capacity for evil and betrayal.
  • Jason puts in one last request: to be allowed to see over the proper burial of his children. Medea denies him the right and decides she will bury them and expiate the crime herself. Riding away on a golden chariot gifted by her grandfather, fleeing from the destruction she's caused.
