- 'Gawain grips the axe... then swings it swiftly towards the bare skin... the handsome head tumbles onto the earth and the king's men kick it as it clatters past"

- Sir Gawain receives shelter form king Bertilak, and promises to do anything he wants to repay him so the king proposes a game
- suddenly the green knight summons up his strength, hoists the axe high over Gawain's head... the knight, being brave would have died from the blow. But glimpsing the axe at the edge of his eye bringing death earthwards as it arced through the air, and sensing its sharpness , Gawain shrank at the shoulders

- Sir Gawain arrives at the green chapel to face the green knight
