- Hey son, have I ever told you about the time cheetahs went through the bottleneck effect?
- No dad I don't think you have.
- Cheetahs had migrated all over the world about 100,000 years ago so they were very spread out during this time being in many different continents.
- well you see, it was the end of the last ice age which was about 10,000-12,000 years ago.
- Ah, I'm so glad you asked. Let me explain it for you.
- Wow that's crazy. I had no idea something like that happened. But what is the bottleneck effect anyway?
- Right after this ice age the cheetahs that lived in Europe and North America went extinct leaving the species only in Africa and Asia.
- Because of this event, later on the genetic variety and population of cheetahs was very low because of how many died.
- The bottleneck effect is a form of genetic drift. It is when a big event occurs(usually a natural disaster) that wipes out a large chunk of a species population at random.
- Now, because so much of the population is gone there will be a big change in the alleles that are passed on to new generations because many of the organisms with certain alleles will be gone. This will ultimately cause evolution over many generations.
- No problem son. Now lets eat this food before it gets cold!
