On Friday, June 12th, 1987, President Ronald Reagan made a speech in front of the Berlin Wall.

Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

In August of 1961, the Berlin Wall was made. It split the capital of Germany into two sides: the East and the West.

Currently, the Berlin Wall is almost entirely torn down. It has an abundance of graffitiat the moment.

East Berliners (Soviet-controlled) often had financial problems and their general quality of life was poorer than the West Berliners.

Many protests followed the famous speech. People came in very large numbers.

Most people in Berlin (and Germany as a whole) were not happy with the Berlin Wall.

Finally, in November 1989, the Berlin Wall was torn down. For the first time in many people's lives, they could freely go the the other side of Berlin. The full reunification of Germany was in 1990.

The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolized the collapse of the Soviet Union. On December 26th, 1991, the USSR collapsed and became Russia. The Cold War was over, after about 45 years.
