  • Hi! I am Asha de Vos! I study Wales for a living. In the 1600's there were so many whales that you could walk over their backs in the oceans. Over 200 years of whaling for meet, oil, and bone, destroyed the population.
  • The save the whale movement of the 1970's helped to stop commercial whaling. By the 1980's whaling bans were in place and their population began to rise.
  • Whales provide significant benefits to our ecosystem. Whale poop, is brought from deep into the ocean to the surface in a fecal plume bringing nutrients necessary for phytoplankton. Rotting carcasses give life to over 400 species.
  • Grey whales migrate 16,000 km from their feeding to birthing areas. When they do, they transport fertilizer to areas that need it helping to create the nutrient cycle.
  • Dead whale carcass transports 190,000 tons of carbon into the deep ocean carbon sink. This helps to delay global warming witch is a significant benefit to humans.
  • Whaling destroyed between 60 to 90 percent of the whale population. Although the save the whale movement has helped, whales and being killed by ships and fishnets. Today, we must save the whales again for our own sake.
