One day Keawe, a native of Hawaii, decides to visit other lands and embarks on a ship headed for San Francisco.

Where Keawe is fascinated to see a beautiful house, whose owner, instead, seems sad and lonely, Keawe wonders how the owner of such a beautiful house can be so unhappy.
