Storyboard Text

  • Idiom
  • Well, what are you waiting for? Spill the beans!
  • I have good news, Jennifer.
  • Irony
  • Man, what a nice view.
  • Allusion
  • Wow, this is better than Beethoven!
  • An idiom is a phrase where the words together have a meaning different from the dictionary definition. This is an example of an idiom because Jennifer tells the doc to "Spill the beans," which doesn't mean literally to open a can of beans and spill it. It means to tell the secret.
  • Motivation
  • Gotta do it for Jerry!
  • Irony is the contrast between the way things seem and the way they really are. This example is a form of verbal irony because she is talking about how the view is nice but it actually isn't because there is only miles of snow in every direction, which in turn is burning her eyes because she does not have protective glasses.
  • Foreshadowing
  • Is it just me or is the water going really far back?
  • An allusion is an indirect reference to a person, place, or thing. This example of an allusion shows a person in awe over a guy playing a piano. He is so amazed by his performance that he goes as far to say "This is better than Beethoven!" which is a reference to Ludwig van Beethoven, widely regarded to be one of the best composers ever.
  • Analogy
  • Canada's provinces are just like how America has states!
  • Motivation is the reason someone has for acting or behaving a certain way. This is an example of motivation because there is a runner who is saying "Gotta do it for Jerry!" which shows that he is pushing himself to run for someone named Jerry AKA his motivation.
  • Foreshadowing is the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in the plot. This is an example of foreshadowing a tsunami because although they don't directly mention the possibility of a tsunami coming they do point out the fact that the water is receding, which is a sign that a tsunami could be coming. And in this story a tsunami does come.
  • It's just the tide, cmon lets go play volleyball!
  • An analogy is a comparison between two different things that are similar in a way. This teacher uses an analogy to better explain the concept of Canada's provinces by comparing them to America's states.
