Storyboard Text

  • There are a lot of people who think equality and equity can be used interchangeably. We are going to discuss how they are not interchangeable.
  • Equality means everyone gets the same support and this is equal treatment for everyone.
  • Equity is where everyone will get what they need to succeed. Let us look at an example.
  • Jack has a hard time sitting still in class and can not focus on what is being taught because his mind is racing.
  • Equality tells us each student will be provided a textbook, ChromeBook and a teacher who explains the assignments. Everyone is treated equal and receives the same tools
  • Lily is sensitive to sound and bright light. When she is at school it is difficult for her to be in a classroom.
  • Krissy is attentive while in class. She enjoys learning new things and doesn't struggle on memory retention.
  • Equality sounds nice, because everyone is given the same tools. However, not everyone learns and functions the same.
  • If assistance are not given for some of the issues the students have, they won't be able pass the class.
  • Jack has a hard time sitting still in class and can not focus. Teacher gives him a fidget tool and he is able to listen to the lecture
  • Equity shows us that some people need more tools to succeed in life and that's okay! With everyone learning the same concept but on their own understanding with tools that work for them.
  • Lily is sensitive to sound and bright light. Teacher allows her to wear sunglasses and noise cancelling headphones. She is able to learn with in own setting
  • Krissy is attentive while in class. She doesn't need any extra tools to help her be successful.
