Since we only live on a small farm in the mid-Atlantic, you won't have to do much because me and your big brother will be doing most of the hard work.
Today son, is the day you learn how to farm.
Someday you and your big brother will work on this farm all on your own. You’ll be planting, watering, and harvesting just like I did. But for now, I’ll teach you the basics.
We may be much poorer than the rich landowners, but we still have lots of pride in what we do.
Very good. Now, give it to me, and I will show you how it's done. The best part about doing your own work, is that you don't even need slaves to do it for you! When you start to take care of this farm, I hope you will carry the tradition of doing everything by hand.
First, you need to till the ground. Please pick up that hoe.
When I was your age, I was so proud when my father taught me how to till the fields. No one had taught him before that, he had to pick it up naturally.
Even though we don’t have a good education, we can still make ourselves useful by working on the farm.
We grow wheat, grain, corn, and other crops to keep us alive. We don't have enough to share with other people, and we only sell when we have extras, or when we need extra money.
The best part about our small farm, is that it's all ours.
Y'know son, we may be poor, and we may not have everything we wish for, but at least we have the ability to vote, to work whole-heartedly, and to still get to be with our family.
To me, I think that's anything a man could ever ask for.
