  • The Interview
  • Hester at Her Needle
  • Pearl
  • Chillingworth starts his plot for revenge against Dimmsdale due to the fact that he has relations with his family but he means no ill will towards Hester who also took part in those relations. In chapter 4 Hester says, Would'nt thou avenge thyself on the inocent babe? This shows that he is no position to take revenge on anyone as he would be in the same position as Reverand Dimmsdale.
  • Many of the towns women talk badly of Hester and strongly disagree with her actions although when they see that she make beautiful clothing they stop to purchase her work but still go home to speak badly of her. In chapter 5 it says, But it is not recorded that, in a single instance, her skill was called in to embroider the while veil which was to cover the pure blushes of a bride. The exception indicated the ever relentless vigour with which society frowned upon her sin.. This evidence shows that the townspeople are hypocritical in a way that they will talk poorly of Hester but will still go and buy the clothing she makes.
  • Hester has become frustrated with Pearl and her moodiness and mischief but has come to see that she herself is the same way in that Pearl has inherited these atributed from her mother. In chapter 6 it says, After testing both smiles and frowns, and proving that neither mode of treatment possessed any calculable influence, Hester was ulitmately compelled to stand aside and permit the child to be swayed by her own impulses. This shows that after her realization of the similarities the two have she has given leniency to Pearl.
