Storyboard Text

  • The farmers who fought in the Revolutionary War had received little compensation, and by the 1780s many were struggling to make ends meet. Businesses in Boston and elsewhere demanded immediate payment for goods that farmers had previously bought on credit and often paid off through barter.
  • A group of protestors, led by Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Shays, began a 6 month rebellion by taking over the Court of Common Pleas in Northampton; the goal was to prevent the trial and imprisonment of debt-ridden citizens.
  • Some of the rebels were caught, tried and hanged. Others, including Shay, were pardoned. Shays' Rebellion was unsuccessful at overthrowing the government of Massachusetts through armed insurrection.
