It is 1941 in the Wiesel family's home town of Sighet, Hungarian Transylvania. Elie who is the protaganoist, is introduced including his parents Mr. and Mrs. Wiesel and his three sister Béa, Tzipora and Hilda. They are a Jewish family who is well respected by the Jewish community. Elie who is currently 15 years old, takes deep pride in his faith in God and begins taking more priority in learning. With the help of Moishe the Beadle a poor Jew of Sighet who is willing to teach the young boy about Jewish Mysticism, Elie is well on his way to mastering these areas like Moishe.
Climax
Women and children to the right, men to the left... Quickly.
Ever since the beginning of the Second World War, the people of Sighet question when, or if the front is moving to Hungary, or even if the war would end before Hungary gets involved... This was until all the foreign Jews got deported from Sighet, which includes Moishe the Beadle. Escaping near death, Moishe returns to Sighet, warning the jews about the dehumanizing acts he had witnessed once he was deported... However nobody believed him, simply because they could not possibly fathom that such things could be happening.
Falling action
German soldiers enter the town of Sighet mandating new rules, and limiting rights... Ghettos are formed, a gold star was placed on each Jew in order to differenciate the Jewish between those who weren't. They are told they are being deported, and placed in concentration camps. For three whole days, Elie and his father, including many other passengers are in the same cattle car where they met a woman by the name of Mrs. Schachter, she screams about seeing these flames, and once again was called mad by the other jews.
Resolution
The Jews of Sighet arrive finally at Birkenau... At this time, the men are seperated from the women and children. Then on, father, son and other men travelled from concentration camp to other camps, first Auschwitz then Buna. It is here where Elie witnesses the dehumanizing acts done by man to other people such as death, starvation and greed while fighting personal issues within.
Due to the cold weather conditions, Elie suffered a grave infection on his foot until he had an operation done in the infermery. That is until the camp is forced to be evacuated and Elie among other prisoners are forced to do a 50 mile death march to Gleiwitz. Many prisoners were lost at this time, and only 12 survived upon getting dropped off by train at Buchenwald.
From the start of the deportation until now, in Buchenwald, Elie has fought to keep his father alive, making various sacrifies and risks because at the end of the day he was all he had. The inevitable fate of his father had came, and he passed. This causes Elie to suffer even more than he was before while questioning who he was, while expiriencing despair and relief because his suffering had came to an end. Elie and the remainder of the camp were released on April 11th 1945.
