  • In 2020, Colorado passed HB20-1158 as part of the Colorado Building Families Act. This bill was meant to require insurance companies to cover fertility diagnosis, preservation, and treatment services. However, improper wording of the bill led to no enforcement of this new law.

  • Early in my clinical year I learned about the barriers to accessing fertility preservation services. Dr. Appiah assured her patients that she was working hard to get these services covered by insurance companies.

  • In 2022, HB22-1008 was introduced to amend the previous bill regarding insurance coverage of fertility services. It requires that all large group insurance plans in CO provide coverage for fertility diagnosis, preservation for cancer patients or other medically induced infertility, and fertility treatment services.

  • This bill will put more regulations on Colorado businesses which we do not support. It also does not require an assessment to make sure the state is not required to pay any increase in insurance premiums.

  • HB 22 - 1008 was signed into law on 4/13/22. Testimonies at the hearings discussed the burden of fertility service costs and lack of knowledge about infertility.
  • House: The bill passed with a vote of 45 Y and 20 N
  • We are so excited that fertility services will now be covered by large group insurance plans in Colorado! Next step is to expand this to small group or individual plans as well as federal plans.
