  • The impacts of WWII were still being felt all over the world when two world powers once again ignited fear especially in Europe. The Cold War began in 1949 and saw the clash of two political ideas, Communism versus Democracy.
  • In 1949 the United States and many allied countries came together and developed NATO. The goal of NATO was to provide collective security against the Soviet Union and prevent the spread of communism. In addition, all the countries wanted to rebuild their economies following WWII.

  • In 1955 the Soviet Union and seven European allies signed the Warsaw Pact in Warsaw Poland. The pact was a direct reaction to West Germany decision to join NATO. Another purpose was to establish a strong unified military that could protect one another in case of attack.
  • From the mid 1940's to late 1980's international politics was greatly influenced by the rivalry between the two powerful groups of nations. This was also intensified by military coalitions, weapons development, space races, invasions, espionage, and propaganda.
  • During 1989 and 1990 the Berlin Wall came down and the Iron Curtain was lifted. Borders were opened, elections took place to end communism in countries and the Cold War came to an end.
