  • Defense MechanismsBy: Barce Jose Manuel S.
  • I'm so lazy and I need to start being more productive.
  • PROJECTION
  • Projection is a defense mechanism where a person projects an unwanted feeling onto another person. The brother here is projecting his resentment at being lazy onto his younger sister.
  • Stop being so lazy and help Mom out!
  • Sublimation is a defense mechanism where a person directs their impulse towards a pro-social activity. In this case, the woman is releasing her stress by jogging, which is socially acceptable.
  • SUBLIMATION
  • I'm jogging to release my stress from my job.
  • Reaction formation is a defense mechanism where a person reacts to an unwanted feeling by expressing the exact opposite emotion. Here, the worker is angry with his boss's suggestion, but he thanks him for the feedback.
  • REACTION FORMATION
  • Sure! Thanks for the input
  • ARGH!!! HE IS SO PICKY!!!
  • Bob, that presentation needs work!
  • Regression is the return of a person's behavior to a previous stage of life when faced with an unwanted feeling. Here, the boy is feeling anxious and jealous of the attention his sister is getting, so he starts wetting the bed again.
  • REGRESSION
  • After my sister was born, my parents ignore me.
  • Rationalization is a defense mechanism where the person makes a logical explanation to justify mistakes and unwanted/conflicted behavior. For example, this boy rationalizes his behavior by arguing that he'll only play for 5 more minutes, and that the test will be easy tomorrow.
  • RATIONALIZATION
  • I'm only going to play for 5 more minutes! Besides, tomorrow's test can't be that hard. How hard can chemistry be anyway!
